Importing walnuts from Chile or exporting tangerine juice from Chios? Globalisation and the current economic crisis is putting agricultural production under the spotlight for European nations. Some claim that: “Dramatic changes are occurring in the agricultural sector today. These changes provide 
opportunities for some, but threats for others.  Twenty-first century agriculture is likely to be 
characterized by: more global competition; expansion of industrialized agriculture; production 
of differentiated products; precision (information intensive) production; emergence of 
ecological agriculture; formation of food supply chains; increasing risk; and more diversity”. Quality control, standardization and product premiumization strategies should remain primary areas of focus for improvement in the quest for building sustainable competitive advantage.  When the stakes are high and the changes rapid, the need for action is more pressing than ever. It is consoling to think that with the change in attitudes and habits, there will come and ensuing mentality change that can only be welcome.
